Optional: Hot sauce or crushed red pepper to taste

Cooking Directions

In a colander or sieve, rinse beans thoroughly. Sort and inspect for any unwanted debris and discard.

Drain and pour beans in a slow cooker with 8 cups of stock/water, onions, garlic, and meat or hambone. (Not tomato or lemon juice yet!). Use 9-10 cups of liquid if you like a more "brothy" soup.

Birlashtirish uchun aralashtiring. Set slow cooker on high and cook for 5-7 hours then check to make sure beans are tender. The soup can continue to simmer for several hours and will develop more flavor over time.

After the beans are tender, remove the hambone (leave any ham in the pot), stir in the can of diced tomatoes, our Ham Flavor packet, optional chili powder, and the lemon juice.

Cook for additional 30 minutes then keep warm until ready to serve.

We recommend to serve with a freshly baked slice of corn bread! You can also serve over rice as well.

Please keep in mind that every time the lid is opened, your cooking time will be longer.

For even more flavor, substitute beef, chicken or vegetable stock instead of water.

You can also try 1 lb. boneless chicken breasts or 1 lb. beef roast, then shred meat before Step 5 above.

As with all dry bean recipes, it's best to wait until AFTER the beans have become tender or fully cooked before adding any acidic ingredients like tomatoes, citrus, vinegars, etc.

You can add other vegetables like carrots & celery for even more flavor and nutrients

Remember that this is a NO SOAK recipe, but if you have already soaked the beans that's not a problem, just use 1 cup of water/stock less.

Variations on the recipe will work for almost all of Hurst's HamBeens items.

If you prefer a more "brothy" soup, add an extra cup of liquid when preparing

After the 60 minutes of soaking, return the pot to high heat and place the ham bone, carrots, celery, onion, garlic, mustard and bay leaves in the pot. Stir well, bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 60 more minutes.

Remove ham bone and discard. Stir in the chopped ham and simmer for 30 more minutes. Season with ground white pepper to taste.

  • Lentils (I used both orange and brown for color)

The next step is to put together a spice packet, so that the person you give the gift to can actually cook the soup and have it taste great. Dried beans on their own are very low in flavor and need spices. For my spice blend I used these herbs:

  • Spanish Paprika
  • Cumin
  • Red Pepper Flakes
  • Minced Onion Flakes
  • Sea Salt
  • Celery Salt
  • Cracked Black Peppercorns

Just blend your spices together to make the spice blend for your spice packet.

Now it is time for some printing. I made both a jar label and a recipe card for you to use.

I printed mine out on,glossy photo paper so that it would present well and not smudge.

The next step is to use a glue stick to glue the recipe card to the back of the jar label and punch a hole with a hole punch in the corner.

I put my spice mix into a small zip lock bag. (I used asmall jewelry baggie that I had on hand but any small baggie will do.

Punch a hole in the corner for a ribbon.Time to assemble the beans! I layered them by alternating the darker beans and lighter colored ones to make a pretty presentation.

I placed my beans in the larger sized 32 ounce Mason Jar. They filled it right to the top of the jar!

Now comes the ribbon. I chose an autumn plaid ribbon,and threaded it through both the spice packet and my Jar label/recipe card.

The last thing to do is to tie it around the neck of my filled Mason Jar. Voila! The perfect hostess gift.

While you can certainly adapt them for the slow cooker, soups don’t take long on the stove, so that’s how I prefer to make them. Soups freeze really well, so feel free to make big batches to save yourself some time in the kitchen weeks from now.

Tuscan Bean Soup Recipe

2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, diced

1 cup yellow squash, diced

1 ⁄ 4 tsp red pepper flakes

4 cups unsalted chicken broth

2 (15oz) cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed

1 (14.5oz) can no salt added diced tomatoes

2 cups kale, chopped (ribs removed)

Heat extra-virgin olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrots, celery, zucchini, and squash. Sauté for 5 minutes.

This 15 Bean Soup with Ham and Sausage is a hearty and delicious recipe that makes great use of leftover ham and the ham bone. My family enjoys this soup after the holidays and on cold winter nights. I have include instructions on how to cook 15 Bean Soup on the stove top, for the slow cooker and Instant Pot Pressure.

Savory and delicious 15-bean soup with ham and sausage

  • 1 pound bag of dried 15-Bean Soup Mix with Seasoning Packet*
  • Vegetable oil
  • 1 katta piyoz, tug'ralgan
  • 3 to 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound cooked ham, chopped
  • 1 ham bone or 2 to 3 ham hocks**
  • 1 pound kielbasa sausage, cut in half and sliced
  • 2 large carrots, washed, peeled, and chopped
  • 1 small zucchini, sliced (optional)
  • 2 (15-ounce) cans tomatoes, diced or stewed (with liquid)
  • 1 (32-ounce) container chicken stock or broth***
  • Ta'mga ko'ra tuz va qalampir

Set aside the Seasoning Packet that comes with the 15-Bean Soup Mix.

Rinse and drain the dried beans. Check for any unwanted debris and discard. Place the beans in a large pot and cover with cold water by approximately 3 inches.

Quick Soak or Power Soak: Bring water almost to a boil (small bubbles appear around the edges of the pot) and let simmer 2 minutes. Remove from heat, cover with lid, and let stand for one (1) hour. After 1 hour, drain off the water.

Your beans are now ready to use in your favorite recipes.

In a large soup pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, add some vegetable oil and sautonions and garlic until tender. Add reserved seasonings, ham, ham bone, sausage, prepared beans, stewed or diced tomatoes with liquid, carrots, and zucchini. Pour in just enough chicken broth until bean mixture is covered with at least 2 inches of liquid over the top of the soup bean mixture.

Bring the soup mixture just to a boil, stir and reduce heat to medium-low to simmer for 2 to 2 1/2 hours until all the different bean sizes are tender. While the soup is simmering, stir every once in awhile and add additional water if needed. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Serve soup in individual soup bowls. Xursand bo'ling!

Preheat the Slow Cooker (Crock Pot). et aside the Seasoning Packet that comes with the 15 bean soup mix.

Add oil to a large frying pan over medium-high heat and sautonions and garlic until tender.

Rinse the beans and add to slow cooker along with reserved Seasonings, onions, garlic, ham, ham bone, sausage, carrots, zucchini, and stewed or diced tomatoes with liquid. Pour in enough chicken broth until bean mixture is covered with at least 2 inches of liquid over the top of the soup mixture. Stir and cover with lid.

Cook on high for 4 hours or low for 8 hours (until all the beans are tender).

Salt and pepper to taste and serve in individual soup bowls. Xursand bo'ling!

Ni bosing Saute button and adjust to Yuqori heat setting. When the Instant Pot registers "Hot", add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and let oil heat up for a minute. Add onions and saute for 3-4 minutes until the onions are softened, then add the garlic and saute for about 30 seconds. Add reserved seasonings from bean mix,ham bone, dried beans, stewed or diced tomatoes with liquid and pour in just enough chicken broth until bean mixture is covered with at least 2 inches of liquid. Stir everything together. Note: Make sure pot is no more than 1/2 full when cooking dried beans.

Ni bosing Cancel/Keep Warm tugma. Cover with lid and close the lid to seal. Make sure the pressure valve is closed to seal. Next press the Qo'l bilan button, adjust to high pressure sozlash. Set the cooking time to 35 minutes. When the cooking time has completed, let the pressure naturally release until the pin drops to indicate all the pressure has released (this take about 20 minutes).

Open the lid and add the ham, sausage, carrots and zucchini and stir everything together. Cover with lid and close the lid to seal. Make sure the pressure valve is closed to seal. Next press the Qo'l bilan button, adjust to high pressure sozlash. Set the cooking time to 10 minutes. When the cooking time has completed, Quick Release the pressure until the pin drops to indicate all the pressure has released. Open the lid and add salt and pepper to taste. * I like to use Hurst's Brand 15-Bean Soup Mix. You can buy the package of 15-Bean Soup in your local grocery store which is packaged with a variety of 15 different kinds of dried beans and a Seasoning Packet.

** Ham hocks can be found in most local grocery stores (ask the butcher, if you can't find them).

History of Soup Beans: In the Southern United States and particularly the Appalachian Mountain region, soup beans refer to brown beans (such as pinto beans) that are cooked with pork for flavoring. Other types of beans can also be used such as white beans, butter beans, and black-eyed peas.

Soup Beans used to be served during the winter months in many rural areas when food was scare and considered a main staple food. Soup beans are often re-cooked as fried bean cakes, or made into mountain chili the next day. In the winter months, a pot of beans simmered on the stove of every house every day.

Beans are known for causing flatulence or excessive gas. One old wives’ tale says, “To prevent this, cook a potato in the beans. The potato absorbs the gas but be careful when you dispose of the potato because you now have a ‘Hillbilly’ hand grenade.”
